New work—trial animation

Up to now, I have been animating my artworks in Adobe Photoshop, essentially creating stop motion films, one frame at a time. Even with a degree of automation, it’s a very tedious process, and everything needs to be set correctly from the start, or I have to stop and go back and do all the work over again.

It’s been my long-standing ambition to use SVG—”scalable vector graphics”—a picture description language that enables the creation of shapes and patterns using code. On top of that, it allows animation and interaction, key elements of what I am trying to achieve.

I have much more to work out, but here is a simple proof of concept—the baseline circle pattern that I use to create some of my works, with a simple animation.

Just note that on some devices, animating this image in real time is a “compute heavy” process—so your CPU may start running hot if you leave it going for a while.
