Interchange, 2023

I grew up deeply fascinated by the OpArt movement, its starkly geometrical compositions pushing the boundaries of traditional artistic techniques.

Vasarely’s artworks showcase his mastery of form and color, arranging basic geometric shapes with strategic use of contrasting hues, to create the illusion of depth and movement on a static two-dimensional canvas. His series of “kinetic” paintings seem to pulsate and shift as viewers move around them.

His paintings and prints, though, only appear to move. They are fixed, forever frozen.

My interest is in works that require something more from the Viewer, not just your eyes. If you just look at this piece, then it stays flat, immobile. But when you touch it, it comes alive, responding to your touch. And when you move away, it slowly subsides back to quiescence.

As you explore the image, I hope you will find the paint palette hidden in the upper left hand corner, which will allow you to adjust the colors in the different parts of the tiles, and create all sorts of the unlikely color combinations that Vasarely delighted in.
