Rivers, 2023

One of the best things about mobiles is how the shapes interact as they move around, coming together, parting again, constantly creating new combinations. I wanted to capture some of that in this piece. The lines start out randomly moving around the canvas, responding to your touch. As you flip the tiles around, you can connect up channels, forming rivers of color, or little floating islands, but one more touch re-shapes them, the colors vanishing or coming back again in different patterns.

Since coming to the United States, I have been struck by how colorful Fall is in New England—the flaming yellows, oranges and reds of the leaves set against the deep blue skies of Autumn, or reflecting in the rippling brooks and rivers running through the trees.  And that inflects my principal colorway for this piece—Autumn.

To further the metaphor of running water, the colors move in ripples—but here we run into some technical difficulties: iOS, the software used on iPhones and iPads, does not currently handle animated gradients properly, so if you are previewing this piece on one of those devices, I’m afraid you will not get the full experience.

Once again, it’s possible the change the colors present in the image, and to turn the rippling on and off. Since there are so many colors to change, I’ve also included some pre-set colorways representing the changing seasons.
