Library Walk

I’ve always been sad that brass rubbing is not a thing in the United States—New York has so many beautiful and intricate brass plates and plaques just crying out to be transferred onto paper, framed and mounted on the wall!

Here is a selection of the brasses from the New York Public Library’s Library Walk on 41st Street, created in 1998 by the artist Gregg Lefev and celebrating the books and writing, printing and poems, preserved in the library. One day, I’ll go back and do proper brass rubbings!

(I am reminded by the artist to ask that if you do want to take brass rubbings of these plates, please don’t do anything that gets ink on them—that is very damaging to the brass.)
